Sleep Hygiene

When it comes to sleep apnea and chronic snoring, the first step is to assess the factors that are currently preventing you from achieving a restful night’s sleep. Not every patient will need specialized treatment or an oral appliance, which is why we begin by evaluating patients to determine if adjustments to their sleep schedules and routines might address their sleep apnea.

Think of sleep hygiene as setting yourself up for a successful night’s sleep. Quality sleep hygiene includes various routines like avoiding alcohol and caffeine before bed, not exercising strenuously before sleep, not watching television in the bedroom, and other factors that can interfere with your sleep schedule and lead to sleep apnea.

Sleep Testing in Richland

If you believe that your sleep apnea cannot be addressed through adjustments to your sleep hygiene, then a sleep study conducted at home or in a Tri-Cities area sleep center may be your next step. Your primary care physician or a certified sleep physician can recommend the proper sleep test (either a home study or a Polysomnogram).

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the the American Academy of Sleep Medicine require that obstructive sleep apnea be ruled out before a patient is approved for an oral appliance. Your sleep study will determine what your next course of action will be.

Oral appliances sound like something you buy at the hardware store, and many of our patients are only familiar with the C-PAP machine, a rather intimidating device. If the idea of an oral appliance makes you uneasy, don’t worry. Advancements in technology have made oral appliances easier to use, convenient to travel and store, and noise-free.
